Big feet, little feet, feet, feet, feet!

Big feet, little feet, feet feet feetOver the next few weeks we will be focusing on our feet, perhaps the most neglected part of our body.

We pay attention to our feet after a long day of standing on them and they hurt.  “Ah, I think I need to soak my feet”.  We certainly become aware of their importance when they are injured.  Sometimes, not always, we’ll consider them when purchasing a new pair of shoes but more often it’s about fashion not health.  When was the last time you thanked your feet?  Really, they are under a lot of pressure.

Paying attention to your feet has so many advantages and we just don’t take them seriously enough.  Good posture, proper body alignment, connection to the earth, body position, situational position are just a few demands we place on them.  These are just the everyday walkabout responsibilities of our feet.  Think about how much more stress they are under when we are training martial arts.  Horse stance, tiger stance, jumping jacks, cat stance, jumping rope, squats, jump spinning kicks… you get the idea.  Poor little guys.  Connect with them.  Become more mindful of each step, how you take it, how it feels, where it goes.

So over the next few weeks we’ll pay attention to what we do with them and thank them.  Don’t worry, we won’t get our noses close enough to our sparring partners feet to offend unless of course you drop your hands for a kick to the head.  Breath, relax, structure, MOVE.
